Virgin Media have been testing out their superfast fibre network in London to see if it will be able to reach 4G speeds, with the hopes of bringing the service to everyone in the UK later in 2012.
Virgin are trying to launch this service nationwide so that no matter where you live across the UK you’ll be able to receive internet speeds that will allow you to do things such as gaming online, streaming videos without any hassle. They are going to be using tiny transmitters which will allow people to connect to the internet and get speeds which are many times faster than what people are used to at the moment.
Virgin have done several tests with their latest technology in Oxford Street, London. Many people believe that this will be the future of how people will access the internet since more and more people are using the internet for more data heavy tasks such as streaming movies online from services such as Netflix.
The way that it works is a little bit like a Wi-Fi router that most people have in their homes, however the technology that Virgin are planning on bringing out will be able to cover a much bigger distance than a regular Wi-Fi router. Vodafone are also interested in the project but Virgin are currently better placed to deliver, since they have a great fibre optic network in place already.
